Ways to Obtain Citizenship in Cyprus

Being a permanent residency status holder can be extremely beneficial since permanent residency can eventually become Cypriot citizenship, something that has been increasingly sought after and the interest in obtaining it has seen a significant rise in recent times.

Other than by investment, there are more ways to obtain Cypriot citizenship. The most common paths to citizenship in Cyprus include:

Investment program

Holders of permanent residency by investment can apply for Cypriot citizenship 5 years after obtaining their permanent residency. Applicants must continuously live in Cyprus for the whole year before their application. During this 1 year of continuous residing in Cyprus, short absences for holidays or emergencies are allowed.


People who have resided in Cyprus legally for 7 years and have continuously lived in Cyprus for the last year before the application date. The period of 7 years is reduced to 5 years for the children or parents of a Cypriot citizen or holders of Cyprus Permanent Residency, like, for example, people with a permanent residency by investment.

The application fee is €500 and once the application is approved there is an additional fee of another €500.

Marriage to a Cypriot citizen

For foreign spouses of Cypriot citizens may be eligible to apply for citizenship through marriage after three years of marriage and two years of presence in the Republic.

Foreign spouses of Cypriot citizens who live abroad can also apply for citizenship if the couple has been married for at least three years and after submitting a letter stating the reasons why they want to obtain Cypriot citizenship.

The application fee is €300.

Birth or descent

People with Cypriot roots can get Cypriot citizenship. Anyone born in Cyprus or at least one of their parents is a Cypriot citizen, can get citizenship by descent.

Cyprus citizenship by descent can be obtained in different ways based on each person’s background:

  • Application Type M121

This application is submitted for a Consular Birth Certificate and concerns minors or adults who were born abroad after the 16th of August 1960 and whose father at the time of their birth was a Cypriot citizen, and by individuals born after the 11th of June 1999 and whose mother was a Cypriot citizen at the time of their birth.

  • Application Type M126

This application is submitted for the registration of minors who were born before the 11th of June 1999 in Cyprus or abroad and whose mother is a Cypriot citizen and father a foreigner or for minors whose father acquired Cypriot citizenship after their birth. This application can also be submitted for minors, whose father or mother acquired the Cypriot citizenship by naturalization or by registration due to marriage with a Cypriot citizen.

  • Application Type M123

This application is submitted by adults who were born on the 16th of August 1960 or after and none of their parents at the date of their birth was a Cypriot citizen. Additionally, it can be submitted by adults who were born after the 16th of August 1960 and originate from a person, who became a British citizen based on the Annexation of Cyprus Orders in Council 1914 to 1943 or from a person born in Cyprus after the 5th of November 1914 and prior to the 16th of August 1960.
